Whether you're a  an elite golf club to work on your short game. With some careful planning and the right tools you can DIY a quality putting green in your own back yard. Design your green to suit your preferences, from size to shape to break angles. You can even incorporate personalized features like a sand trap or water hazard.

Landscape Design Planning & Putting Green Setup

As you are carefully planning the layout of your putting green project, you will consider factors like size, shape, slope, and drainage.

Pro Tip: Sketch out your design, marking where your cups will be placed. If more than one piece of turf is needed, it is important to plan out where the seams will fall. If you need help planning your project, get in touch with one of our premier turf experts.

Artificial Turf Quality

Choose a high-quality putting green turf with the appropriate pile height for golf.

Pro Tip: Look for turf designed specifically for putting greens, such as our Supreme Putt and Ultimate Putt. This is important because each has a lower pile height (around 1/2 inch) and a stimp rating (a measure of green speed) of around 9-11.

The Synthetic Grass Store carries numerous putting green turfs in stock and ready for pickup. We can also custom order specialty turf, based on what your putting green project needs. Call us with any questions about putting turf, and one of our in-house turf experts is standing by to help.

What About Remove Existing Sod?

If your putting green project area currently has natural grass, you may need additional tools to remove before building your putting green surface.

Pro Tip: This can be done by hand or with the help of a gas-powered sod cutter. Look for rental tools at The Synthetic Grass Store, or your local home improvement store.

Depending on your landscape surface, vegetation killer can be applied to help prevent weeds during this stage in your process.

Putting Green Base Materials

You'll need quarter minus aggregate or decomposed granite for your leveling base layer.

Pro Tip: The depth of your base will depend on factors like drainage requirements and your local climate but in Arizona 2.5 - 3" is standard. This is a critical step and is necessary for a smooth, even putting surface.

Putting Green Compacting Base Layer

Your putting green base layer should be spread out evenly.

Pro Tip: Wet down with a garden hose, and compact with a hand tamper or a gas-powered compactor. These can be rented at any Synthetic Grass Store location. Visit our turf rental tools page or call us for more information.

The final artificial turf putting green surface should be smooth and uniform.

Installing Weed Barrier

A quality weed barrier fabric is crucial for many synthetic grass installations. Without this turf material, weeds and other vegetation can grow up through the fibers of your artifiical turf or putting green surface.

Pro Tip: Seams should overlap by several inches and the entire surface should be covered. Vegetation killer is sometimes applied after sod removal as an additional precaution.
